Carthage Women's Tennis Takes Two-of-Three on Sept. 12-13 Trip

The Carthage College women’s tennis team (6-2, 4-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) traveled to Wheaton, Ill., on Saturday, Sept. 12 for a double-dual match at Wheaton College (Ill.). Carthage lost to CCIW-opponent and the host-Thunder (3-1, 2-0 CCIW), 8-1, before shutting out Judson University (Ill., 4-1), 9-0.
Elizabeth Worsowicz from Wheaton College (Ill.) defeated Carthage’s Gina Klein (Sr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South, 4-2) at number-one singles on Sept. 12, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. Beth Kaufman (Sr., Barrington, Ill., 2-0) was a winner at number-two singles. Hollis McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 4-2) lost at number-three singles, as did Kristina Naidicz (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper/UW-Oshkosh, 3-1) at number-four singles, Ashley Morgan (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area, 4-2) at number-five singles and Stephanie Zundl (Fr., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown, 3-2) at number-six singles.
The Lady Reds’ number-one doubles team of Klein and McPeek (4-2) lost to the Thunder, as did the number-two team of Kaufman and Naidicz (3-1) and the number-three tandem of Morgan and Bizub (3-2). On Sunday, Sept. 13, the Lady Reds blanked conference-opponent Millikin University (0-3, 0-2 CCIW), 9-0, at Fairfield Park in Decatur, Ill. Carthage travels to Decorah, Iowa, on Saturday, Sept. 19 to play a double-dual match at Luther College. The Lady Reds take on the University of Dubuque at 1 p.m. and the host-Norse at 4 p.m.

Did You Know...
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02. Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009. Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches. Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
