Carthage Men's Lacrosse Helps Single Mothers at Christmas

2009 Carthage Men's Lacrosse Christmas Store

The Carthage College men’s lacrosse team, coached by David Neff, sponsors an annual event known as the Christmas Store. The event allows single mothers to shop for holiday presents at a discount. Each team member buys a gift before Thanksgiving break, and a group travels to Wheaton, Ill., to present their donations. Pictured above is the team’s December 2009 gift collection.

Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10

Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.

Augie Schmidt IV Reaches 700 Wins

With a victory over Ohio Wesleyan University on March 6, Carthage College baseball coach Augie Schmidt IV will became only the 17th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 700-victory plateau.

Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"

The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02. Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.

Paul Smith, a member of Carthage’s inaugural men’s soccer team in 1981, was inducted into the Wisconsin Soccer Association Hall of Fame in March 2010. A native of Racine, Wis., Smith was co-captain and team MVP in 1981 and set a Carthage game record that season, which still stands, by collecting four assists against Milton College on Oct. 21. Smith is currently the outdoors editor of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

L.J. Marx Reaches 100 Wins

Carthage men's volleyball coach L.J. Marx won his 100th career match on April 9 with a 3-0 win over Fontbonne University in the semfinals of the M-III Volleyball Conference Tournamrnt in Kenosha, Wis.

Coach Leanne Ulmer

Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches. Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

First NFL Playoff Game

John “Popeye” Wager, ‘31, was a lineman for the 1932 NFL Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans, who played the Chicago Bears in the first-ever NFL post-season game. The Spartans finished the regular season in a first-place tie with the Bears, whose owner, George Halas, had a playoff game scheduled and moved from Wrigley Field, then the Bears’ home turf, to an indoor contest at the Chicago Stadium.

Kent Dernbach

Former Carthage basketball player Kent Dernbach (2002-03) is currently the Northern Illinois University Director of Men’s Basketball Operations. Dernbach held the same post at George Mason University from 2007 to 2009.

Little All-Americans

The Associated Press has named 16 Carthage football players "Little All-Americans" since 1938, including punter Tyler Funk, a 2009 honoree.

Coach Brady Lindsley

Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009. Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.

Bosko Djurickovic

Carthage men's basketball coach Bosko Djurickovic’s CCIW winning percentage entering the 2009-10 season (.663, 224-114) is the sixth-best in the 63-year history of the league, and his 224 wins placed him first among active conference coaches.

Red Men's 1,000th Basketball Win

With an 85-60 win over Concordia University (Wis.) on Nov. 28, Carthage won its 1,000th men's basketball game. The program began in 1907.

Carthage Turns on the Lights

Carthage added lights to its baseball facility in April 2010. Assistant coach Cory Everts flipped the switch in the bottom of the eighth inning of an April 24 game versus Augustana College (Ill.), marking the first-ever use of the bulbs in a game situation.

Ben Schroeder Hits a Hole-in-One

Red Men men's golfer Ben Schroeder scored Carthage’s first-ever hole-in-one on April 24, 2010 at the Lawrence University Spring Invitational at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Hortonville, Wis. Schroeder aced the 151-yard fifth hole with an 8-iron.
