The Carthage College baseball team won the 2009 CCIW Baseball Tournament on Saturday, May 9 with a 12-3 win over Wheaton College (Ill., 23-19) at the Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha, Wis. Wheaton (Ill.) reached the championship round with an 8-3 decision over Illinois Wesleyan University (24-16) in Saturday morning's semifinal contest. The Wheaton-Illinois Wesleyan game got underway at 5:50 p.m. on Friday and was suspended, on account of darkness, at 7:14 p.m., with the Thunder leading the Titans, 5-2, in the middle of the fifth inning. The two teams resumed play on Saturday morning at 10:33 a.m. The top-seeded Red Men opened tournament play on Thursday, May 7 with a 12-5 win over fourth-seeded and No. 45 Augustana College (Ill., 23-16) in a first-round game. In the tournament's opening game, second-seeded and No. 52 Illinois Wesleyan (24-14) outlasted third-seeded Wheaton (Ill., 21-18), 10-6. Wheaton (Ill., 22-18) eliminated Augustana (Ill., 23-17), 14-12, in a loser's bracket game on Friday, May 8, with Carthage defeating Illinois Wesleyan (24-15), 16-11, in a winner's bracket contest.
