Sammy Ramoni Reaches ITA Semifinals on Oct. 2-4
The Carthage College men’s tennis team (0-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened its 2009-10 season by playing in the Friday-Sunday, Oct. 2-4 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Regional Tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
 
In first-round singles on Oct. 2, Sammy Ramoni (Sr., Honiara, Guadalcanal/New Mexico Military Institute defeated Bethel University’s Joel Cassens, 6-4, 6-4; J.T. Delk (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./North) defeated Hamline University’s Kyle Helgemoe, 6-3, 6-3; Matt Whiteside (So., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep) defeated Pawel Czczepkowski from St. Mary’s University (Minn.), 6-1, 6-1; Andy Schwenke (Jr., Mukwonago, Wis.) defeated Lawrence University’s Jason Dunn, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8; Jeffery Lotz Jr. (Fr., Racine, Wis./Horlick) defeated Hamline’s Andrew Lutz, 6-0, 6-2; Nick Lehnert from Augustana College (Ill.) defeated Carthage’s Nick Boomgarden (So., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area), 6-2, 6-2; St. Olaf College’s Knute Gundersen defeated Chris Vargo, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7; and Coe College’s Scott Stegemann defeated Alex McLean (So., Belleville, Ill./West), 4-6, 6-1, 10-3.
 
In second-round singles, also on Oct. 2, Ramoni defeated Grinnell College’s Dmitry Glumox, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0; Lotz defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Kyle Halweg, 6-2, 6-4; Tyler Johnson from Gustavus Adolphus eliminated Delk, 6-0, 6-2; Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Chris Kuna eliminated Whiteside, 6-1, 6-0; and Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Kevin Fawcett eliminated Schwenke, 6-3, 6-2. 
 
In third-round singles on Oct. 2, Ramoni defeated Mike Lunka from St. Mary’s (Minn.), 6-1, 6-1; but Amrik Donkena from Gustavus Adolphus eliminated Lotz, 7-5, 6-1.  In the fourth round on Saturday, Oct. 3, Ramoni defeated Matt Edin from Concordia University (Minn.), 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.  In the Oct. 3 quarterfinals, Ramoni defeated Dubuque University’s Nick Garcia, 6-2, 6-3.  Ramoni advanced to a Sunday, Oct. 4 semifinal match against Kenyon College’s Mike Greenberg, with Greenberg winning, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.
 
In first-round doubles, Sammy Ramoni and Jeffery Lotz defeated Brendan Anderson and Tucker Combs from the College of St. Scholastica, 8-2; J.T. Delk and Matt Whiteside defeated Macalester College’s Paul Mairet and Titus Levy, 8-5; Alex McLean and Nick Boomgarden lost to Daniel Pomeranc and Peter Wright from Gustavus Adolphus, 8-4; and Andy Schwenke and Chris Vargo lost to Grinnell’s Ishan Bhadkamar and Martin Dluhos, 8-4.
 
In second-round doubles, Ramoni and Lotz defeated Brendon O’Connell and Kevin Walker from the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), 9-7, while Delk and Whiteside lost to Wisconsin Eau-Claire’s Chris Kuna and Phil Loprinzi, 8-1.
 
In third-round doubles, Ramoni and Lotz defeated Patrick Clark and Nikko Karnopp from Gustavus Adolphus, 8-4.  The Carthage duo was finally eliminated in the quarterfinals, 8-1, by Mike Greenberg and Will Vandenberg from Kenyon.

Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
