Carthage Football Falls to Illinois Wesleyan, 42-16, on Oct. 3

The Carthage College football team (3-1, 0-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 35th in the Oct. 5 “D3football.com” poll, opened its CCIW-schedule on Saturday, Oct. 3 with a 42-16 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University (4-0, 1-0 CCIW) at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
 
Carthage fell behind in the game’s opening moments, as the Titans scored on the second play of their opening drive.  Chris Messina caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Kraig Ladd.  The Michael Fenger point-after was good for a 7-0 lead at 14:05.  On the first Carthage drive, Messina returned a blocked Tyler Funk punt 16 yards for a touchdown.  Fenger’s kick was good, and the Titans led, 14-0, at 12:32.  Jack Scalcucci caught a 14-yard TD pass from Ladd midway through the second period.  The two-point conversion was successful, and Illinois Wesleyan led, 22-0, at 7:54.  The Red Men got on the board with a 36-yard field goal by Funk at 4:29 second period, making it a 22-3 game at halftime.  Scalcucci caught a pair of touchdown passes from Ladd  in the third quarter to give the Titans a 35-3 margin.  The first catch in the period was a 36-yarder at 9:28 and the second a 20-yarder at 5:39.  Carthage’s Chris Schulz caught a 40-yard TD pass from Trevor Beazley with 46 seconds remaining in the period to make it a 35-9 game, and Nick Merchut pulled in an 18-yard TD grab  at 10:56 fourth quarter to cut the lead to 35-16.  Illinois Wesleyan closed out the scoring with a 41-yard scoring pass from Brien Rooney to Scalcucci, the latter’s fourth TD reception of the game, at 4:36 fourth period that closed out the scoring at 42-16.
 
Illinois Wesleyan rolled up 495 total offensive yards, 154 rushing and 341 passing, while Carthage managed only 183 total yards, 10 on the ground and 173 in the air.  Kraig Ladd completed 21-of-28 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns.  Jack Scalcucci caught 10 passes for 169 yards, while Chris Messina caught eight for 116 yards.  The Titans’ Eli Williams rushed for 76 yards on 19 carries.  The Red Men’s Evan Jones completed nine-of-15 passes for just 54 yards, and Trevor Beazley completed 11-of-16 for 119 yards.  Each Carthage quarterback was intercepted once.  Red Men safety Marcus Williams collected a game-high 11 tackles.

Did You Know...
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
