Carthage Men's Swimming Opens Season by Edging Hope, 133-129, on Oct. 31

Nathan Ripley wins three events vs. Hope
The Carthage College men’s swimming team opened its 2009-10 season on Saturday, Oct. 31 with a 133-129 win over Hope College at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis.  Nathan Ripley (Sr., Middleton, Wis.) won three events, taking first place in the 50 freestyle (21.87), the 100 freestyle (46.82) and the 200 freestyle (1:46.01). 

Kyle Drake (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) won both the 200 backstroke (1:54.22) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:54.60), while finishing second in the 200 individual medley (1:59.20).  Doug Schranck (So., Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) finished first in both the 100 butterfly (52.49) and the 200 butterfly (1:57.76). 
Eric Ross (So., West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) finished second in both the 500 freestyle (4:55.15) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:04.98).  Chris Varner (Jr., Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) was second in the 100 backstroke (55.21).  Jon Bond (Fr., Dixon, Ill.) was third in the 100 backstroke (55.83), as was Alex Van Huis (Sr., Winneconne, Wis.) in the 200 butterfly (2:04.83), Ryan Ortmann (So., Woodstock, Ill.) in the 50 freestyle (22.50) and Adam Van Huis (So., Winneconne, Wis.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.70).  Carthage travels to Lake Forest, Ill., on Friday, Nov. 6 to take on Lake Forest College in a 6 p.m. dual meet at the Sports Center.

Did You Know...
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
