The Carthage College women’s volleyball team (26-5, 7-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked ninth in the Oct. 27 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll and third in the Oct. 28 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional poll, split a pair of matches on Friday, Oct. 30 at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament IV at the Williams Center in Whitewater, Wis. The Lady Reds lost to St. Ambrose University (28-6), 3-1, before outlasting No. 6 Wisconsin-Whitewater (27-6) by a 3-2 margin.  The Fighting Bees’ winning set scores over the Carthage were 28-30, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23. Carthage’s winning scores over Wisconsin-Whitewater were 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 16-25 and 15-13. 
 
In the win over Wisconsin-Whitewater, the Warhawks jumped out to a quick lead in the first set, scoring the first four points and building a 14-9 lead. The Lady Reds battled back to take their only lead of the set, 21-20, but UW-Whitewater held off the Lady Reds to take the first set 26-24. In the second set, Carthage pulled away to take a four-point lead, 17-1. The Warhawks tied set at 19 each, but the Lady Reds prevailed, taking set two 25-21. Wisconsin-Whitewater trailed most of set three, as the Carthage won by a 25-22 margin. In the fourth set, a 10-point run propelled the Warhawks to a 25-16 win. In the fifth and final set, the Lady Reds were able to build a four point lead, 12-8, when UW-Whitewater called a timeout to stop Carthage's momentum.  The Warhawks battled to within two, 13-11, to force a Lady Reds timeout. The Warhawks pulled to within one at 13-12, but Carthage hung on to win, 15-13. On Saturday, Oct. 31, the Lady Reds take on No. 29 Simpson College at 10 a.m. and Wisconsin-Platteville at Noon.

Did You Know...
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
