The Carthage College football team (4-3, 1-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 4-3, 2-2 CCIW), 42-20, on Saturday night, Oct. 24 at Ericson Field in Rock Island, Ill.
 
Augustana took a 7-0 lead at 4:58 first quarter when David Lee scored on an 18-yard touchdown scamper, capping a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Carthage scored on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Evan Jones to Mike Koeneman with 27 seconds remaining in the first period, capping a 12-play, 66-yard drive. Tyler Funk’s point-after was blocked, and the Vikings led, 7-6. Augustana took a 14-6 lead at 8:00 second quarter when David Lee hooked up with Zachary McCullough on a 13-yard TD pass that completed a 16-play, 80-yard drive. The Red Men fumbled at the Augustana 47-yard line on their next possession, and three plays later, the Vikings scored on a 36-yard run by A.J. Hoger at 6:01, bumping the Vikings’  lead to 21-6. With 34 seconds to play in the half, Augustana’s Andrew Rossett blocked a Tyler Funk punt at the Red Men’s 21-yard line. The Vikings’ Aaron Setchell recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown, and Augustana led, 28-6, at halftime.
 
Tyler Funk had a 21-yard field-goal attempt at 10:34 third period, but a bad snap disrupted that effort. A 46-yard interception by Augustana’s Andrew Rossett midway through the third period set up an eight-yard TD pass to Paul Hornstra that bumped the Vikings’ lead to 35-6 at 6:33. Carthage cut the lead to 35-13 at 12:36 fourth period on a four-card carry by Jake Smith that ended a 14-play, 80-yard drive. A 46-yard run by Robert Wood set up another Augustana touchdown at 4:40 fourth period, with A.J. Hager scoring from the one-yard line to make it 42-13. The Red Men scored on a 13-yard TD pass from Evan Jones to Chas Walton with 2:55 to play to shave the Vikings’ lead to 42-20 and end the scoring.
 
Augustana rolled up 445 total offensive yards, 307 rushing yards and 138 passing, while Carthage had 382 total yards, 55 on the ground and 327 in the air. Evan Jones completed 42-of-56 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns. Jeff Koeneman caught 13 passes for 79 yards. Augustana quarterback David Lee completed 16-of-22 passes for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Vikings’ A.J. Hoger ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, while Robert Wood rushed for 114 yards on 16 carries. Carthage plays host to conference-opponent Millikin University (5-2, 2-2 CCIW) on Saturday, Oct. 31 in a 6 p.m. game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.

Did You Know...
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
