The Carthage College women’s cross country team (33-26) finished 19th at the Saturday, Oct. 17 Wisconsin-Oshkosh “Brooks Invitational” at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis. Calvin College won the 34-team event with 80 points, followed by Washington University (Mo.) second at 93, Minnesota-Duluth third at 98, DePauw University fourth at 140, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fifth at 182, Bethel University (Minn.) sixth at 1876, Hope College seventh at 188, the University of Chicago eighth at 211, CCIW-member North Central College ninth at 284, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 10th at 292, Wisconsin-Whitewater 11th at 341, CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) 12th at 352, conference-member Illinois Wesleyan University 13th at 390, Olivet Nazarene University 14th at 431, Carroll University 15th at 450, CCIW-member Elmhurst College 16th at 453, the Illinois Institute of Technology 17th at 459, Monmouth College 18th at 480 and Carthage 19th with 513 points.
Ayla Mitchell from Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the 6K race with a time of 20:28.52. Carthage’s Morgan Wiechamnn (So., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown) was 62nd at 22:57.35, Karin Wirth (Fr., Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) 79th at 23:14.53, Karen Jackson (Sr., Bloomington, Ill./Downs-Tri Valley) 80th at 23:15.07, Lauren Sible (So., Oregon, Ill./Byron) 145th at 24:31, and Anabel Martinez (Fr., Aurora, Ill./East Aurora) finished 147th at 24:34.13. Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches. Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02. Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009. Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
