Carthage Women's Tennis Finishes Second at CCIW Championship

Beth Kaufman wins CCIW number-two singles title
The Carthage College women’s tennis team (8-4, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) finished second at the Friday-Saturday, Oct. 9-10 CCIW Women’s Tennis Championship at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.  Wheaton College (Ill.) won its 15th league championship and fifth in a row with 72 points, 17 points ahead of second-place Carthage at 55.  North Central College was third at 39, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) fourth at 26, Illinois Wesleyan University fifth at 24, Elmhurst College sixth with five points and Millikin University seventh with three points.  North Park University no longer sponsors varsity women’s tennis.
 
Carthage’s Gina Klein (Sr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South, 10-7) finished third at number-one singles, winning that playback match, 8-1, over Jenna Richardson from Augustana College (Ill.).  Beth Kaufman (Sr., Barrington, Ill., 7-3), won the number-two singles championship with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kayli Edwards from Wheaton College (Ill.).  Hollis McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 12-5) won the number-three singles championship over Wheaton’s Jill Casserly, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7-3).  Kristina Naidicz (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper/UW-Oshkosh, 9-6) lost in the number-four singles championship flight to Wheaton’s Lindsey Hallett, 6-1, 6-0.  Ashley Morgan (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area, 9-5) lost to Wheaton’s Sara Federschmidt in the number-five singles championship round, 6-3, 6-0.  Stephanie Zundl (Fr., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown, 7-7) lost to Illinois Wesleyan’s Alissa Goetz, 8-5, in the playback semifinals.
 
In doubles, Carthage’s Klein and McPeek (12-5) won the number-one title, 6-4, 6-2, over Wheaton’s Kayli Edwards and Elizabeth Worsowicz.  The Lady Reds’ number-two team of Kaufman and Naidicz (8-4) lost to Wheaton’s Lindsey Hallett and Kirsten Boyer in the championship flight, Wheaton winning, 6-7(2-7), 6-1, 7-5.  Carthage’s number-tandem of Morgan and Amanda Bizub (7-7) finished fourth after losing their third-place match to Emily Doemland and Brittany Reece from Augustana (Ill.), 8-2.

Did You Know...
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
