The Carthage College men’s soccer team (2-6-4, 1-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 10-3, 2-1 CCIW), 3-2, on Friday, Oct. 9 at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.  The Thunder were ranked 17th in the Oct. 6 National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division III poll and third in the NSCAA Central Regional poll.  

The game was tied, 2-2, at halftime.  The Red Men took a 1-0 lead at 5:29 on a header goal by Aleks Urosevic (So., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola-Academy), assisted by Tyler Peterson.  A penalty-kick goal by Andrew Gamarra (Sr., Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) at 11:01 made it 2-0 Carthage.  The Thunder got on the scoreboard at 15:20 with a goal by Drew Golz, assisted by both Matt Swartz and Cory Weaver.  Wheaton tied the contest, 2-2, at 34:39 on a penalty-kick goal by Swartz.  

In the second half, the Thunder’s Tyler Risma scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 60:22 on a header off a corner kick by Swartz.  Carthage had shots by Tyler Cortez and Kosta Minchev blocked in the final two minutes of the game.  The Thunder had a narrow edge in shots, 15-13, over the Red Men.  Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent Millikin University (5-7-1-, 0-2 CCIW) on Wednesday, Oct. 14 in a 7 p.m. contest at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.

Did You Know...
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
