Carthage Men's Cross Country Wins Oct. 10 Ripon Invitational

The Carthage College men’s cross country team (28-24) won the Saturday, Oct. 10 Ripon College Invitational in Ripon, Wis.  The Red Men won the seven-team event with 34 points, one point ahead of second-place Ripon at 35.  Wisconsin-Stevens Point was third at 62, followed by the Wisconsin Track Club fourth at 96, Lawrence University fifth at 142, an unattached Wisconsin-Stevens Point team sixth at 177 and the Greater Milwaukee Track Club seventh with 196 points.  

Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Spencer Houk won the 8K race with a time of 26:27.25.  Carthage’s Jake Mahaffey (Fr., Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) was third at 26:39.77, Justin Sebens (Jr., Seymour, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) fifth at 26:46.96, Josh Keck (Fr., Minooka, Ill.) seventh at 27:02.79, Tom Baran (So., Chicago, Ill./Niles-Notre Dame) eighth at 27:05.02, and Tyler Wishau (Sr., Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) was 11th at 27:24.02.  

Also finishing for the Red Men were Alex Nelson (Fr. Carthage travels to Winneconne, Wis., on Saturday, Oct. 17 for the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational at the Lake Breeze Golf Course, beginning at 11:15 a.m.

Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
